I've long had a love for the vintage 'telephone stand'. Born in a time when a home had one phone, and a piece of furniture dedicated to its use; a stand to hold the phone, a seat for comfort during calls, and a drawer for phone books.

I wanted to create a modern telephone stand. In its new guise, a hallway stand, a bedroom piece, or a place to sit whilst sending a message.

The design is comprised of a stand with two overhanging elements at each end. Balance in the composition is created with the drawer box sitting below the stand, and the seat counterpoised above.

As it was in my architectural design, my furniture seeks the same outcomes, namely creating compositions whose surfaces and spaces capture the ethereal movement of light and shadow across them. With this piece, the seat rises up above the top surface of the stand, creating a soft shadow between the two. The drawer box, creates depth and contrasting shadows with the space that is open within it.

My interest in creating engagement and interaction with my designs is achieved through the composition of elements that can only fully be understood and admired by moving around the piece.

With a desire to use Australian woods, I chose quarter sawn Victorian Ash. Its light colour offers greater depth of shadow, whilst its linear grain allows the forms to do the talking as opposed to the figure of the wood.
