This project began with the need for a TV stand. Upon entering my client's lovely Edwardian home, I discovered the TV had to sit in front of a beautiful old fireplace. I did not want to create an enclosed storage unit that would obscure too much of the fireplace. In chatting with my clients about the possibilities, I discovered they had a renovation in mind in the not to distant future, whereby the TV would sit in a different room. Knowing this, my desire was to create something that would serve a second purpose beyond this one. The idea came to mind to design a bench, that could be later used as seating.

Picking up on design elements of the fireplace surround, I admired the mantle and various small shelves, that overhang the brackets they sat on. I took the idea of an overhang and used it in a different manner, making the support beam poke past the end of the bench. As one enters the room first seeing the TV stand side on, rather than a simple bench, I wanted it to be interesting from all angles.
