Whilst in a shop admiring a hand made ceramic plate, I began to ponder - this shape, a circle with a lip around its edge, is a universal form that people the world over, gather around to share a meal.

I asked myself - could this shape be applied to a large plate in wood? A coffee table for my guests to gather around to share a meal or drink.

With the plate as the starting point, my next task was to determine how to hold it off the ground. I like to defy convention. Usually under the top of a coffee table is a set of cross rails attached to its underside, with legs coming down to meet the ground. I flipped that notion upside down - the cross rails on the floor, with the legs rising up to meet the top. This made the cross rails a feature, no longer hidden under the top. It creates a visual balance to the piece, with interest being equally counterbalanced between top and bottom.

Made in American Oak.
