Commissioning a piece of furniture is a special journey. It's about creating something that fits your space perfectly, in a style that resonates with you, with a layout that meets your needs, and a level of craftsmanship that you’ll admire for years to come. When you commission furniture, you're choosing exclusivity, each piece is one-of-a-kind, designed and crafted solely for you. By working with me, you’re partnering with an independent designer and maker, and supporting local business.

The Design Brief

The process begins with getting to know you, understanding the style of furniture you love and the purpose behind the piece. I’ll visit the space where the furniture will live, bringing with me my years of experience as an architect. This allows me to consider how the piece will relate to its surroundings and how it can enhance your enjoyment and interaction with the space. Every detail influences the design, ensuring that the final piece is truly unique to you.

Once I have a clear understanding of your needs, I’ll provide a price range, offering options based on your choice of wood and the level of detail desired. If you're happy to proceed, a deposit is required, and we’ll move on to the next stages of the process.

The Design Process

This is an exciting and engaging part of the process. I present three concept sketches and gather feedback in order to proceed to developing one of the concepts further, via scale models and computer renderings.

Costing

This is heirloom furniture of the highest hand made quality; an asset that will appreciate in value, and be appreciated by its next custodian.

Bespoke pieces are not comparable in cost to that which is bought in store and mass produced. A planter could cost $1,000, whilst a highly detailed, large display cabinet can surpass $10,000.

Once the design is complete, an exact price within the previous price range will be settled upon. Its size, the type of wood, components such as the number of drawers, their level of detail, all influence the cost and can be added or subtracted to bring the piece within budget. This is where we discuss the many options available to you, such as exposed dovetails, waterfall edges, bridal joints and the like, all aspects that will keep you and others admiring the precision, care and love that goes into everything I make.

Making

Depending on the size and complexity of your piece this process can take from one to two months. Along the way I will send you photos of the process, giving you an understanding of how your piece comes together and where in build process we are up to.
