Rocky & Bullwinkle
A showpiece to display, celebrate and store those precious items that too often end up forgotten in a box. My intention was to make this a feature within a space, to highlight the significance of what it displays and what is stored within it.
I began the design process by studying traditional display cabinets. They have long been a variation of a box/cabinet sitting on top of a set of legs. I broke away from tradition by making the legs the feature. In doing so, they frame the space above the cabinets where the objects will be displayed.
The shorter cabinet has two drawers, the taller a cupboard to house other items that are more delicate or difficult to display.
The legs wrap around the piece giving it a different look from any direction in which it is approached. This invites the observer to walk around explore it further and observe the objects it displays form varying angles.
Nearing its completion, I assembled the two boxes together with the frame and lowered it onto the ground for the first time. The outline of the tall and short cabinets bought to mind one of my favourite cartoons as a child called 'Rocky & Bullwinkle'. The show starred a tall moose and a short squirrel. In that moment this piece had its name.
The frame is made in American Oak, stained black. The two cabinets are in New Guinea Rosewood. The spacers between the cabinets and the legs are in copper.
